Celebrating the art of wood engraving over the last 100 years this special exhibition curated by Anne Desmet RA RE is a comprehensive survey of the most outstanding, seminal wood engraved prints from the Ashmolean’s collection, complemented with key additions from private collections including that of Desmet herself.

Including early engravers such as Albrecht Dürer and William Blake the exhibition will chart the history and development of the medium. Notable early 20th-century artists and mid-century greats will be prominent including John and Paul Nash, Eric Gill, Eric Ravilious, Lucien Pissarro, M C Escher, Henry Moore and Gertrude Hermes. More recent outstanding figures such as Edwina Ellis, Simon Brett and Anne Desmet will also be represented, along with selected engravings from international artists demonstrating the global spread of this widely loved art form.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an approx. 200-page fully illustrated catalogue published by the Ashmolean Museum.

The exhibition will open when the Ashmolean reopens in August.
