The Society of Wood Engravers, originally founded in 1920, ceased to operate in the 1970s as a result of changing artistic fashions, printing methods and the demise of teaching engraving in art schools. But, since 1984, led by a new generation of engravers, the refounded Society has organised an unbroken series of Annual Exhibitions which have toured the UK and become the focal point for engraving worldwide.
To celebrate this anniversary, the Society has commissioned a suite of engravings from twenty-five members, each basing their image on a number from one to twenty-five.
The connection may be obvious or it may be more personal. Each print is black and white, 5´´ × 5´´, published in a boxed set as loose prints, in a limited edition numbered
1 to 25. A four-page booklet in each set gives background detail and a commentary
on each image written by the artist.
Each print is in a limited edition of seventy-five.
Prints one to twenty-five are published in boxed sets with an additional ‘25’ print by Chris Daunt.
Prints numbered twenty-six to fifty are in sets, one for each artist.
Prints fifty-one to seventy-five are for the artists’ own use.

Each set also contains an additional engraving by Chris Daunt.
